David Milburn Sponsored CAGU Order Of Merit 2013

David Milburn Order of Merit Winner 2013, James Reeson

The re-arranged inaugural David Milburn Order of Merit took place on a nice, sunny Sunday lunchtime at the Saffron Walden Golf Club. The event had been postponed from the previous Sunday because of a deluge of rain causing a waterlogged course. That day the weather dramatically improved in the afternoon and the course was reopened in glorious sunshine at 2 30pm, too late to start the competition which had already been cancelled.

Yesterday was totally the opposite with horrendous weather coming in at 3 00pm and flooding the greens. Thunder and lightening and heavy rain halted play when the last three ball on the course were on the 10th fairway. In contrast the 1st pair out were Olly Tuck of the home club and John Lorimer of Gog Magog who were now enjoying the comfort of the bar in the clubhouse after racing around the course in under 3 hours.

Play was halted in the hope that the weather would pass over and play could be restarted. At precisely 4 20pm the Competitions Secretary made the decision to abandon play and as everybody had completed 9 holes the committee decided to use the 9 hole results to decide the outcome. It had stopped raining and the sun was about to come out but the greens were still under water so it would not have been possible to resume play for some time and the amount of daylight remaining would have been an issue.

The main contenders for the order of merit were all playing together, namely, Toby Crisp and Luke Bowers of Links and County Champion James Reeson from Brampton Park and they were having a great battle with Luke and James one under par after 6 holes and Toby just one behind. The next 3 holes however were very significant in deciding the outcome of the season long competition as James followed his birdie at the 6th hole with further birdies at 7 and 8. With a par at the ninth hole he had scored an impressive 3 under par 34 for the front nine, and although he did not know it at the time, it was going to be these 9 holes that clinched the title.

Luke finished on one under, tied with Russell Giblett of Girton with Toby on level par 37. Because Luke and Russell shared the points for 2nd and 3rd places, this pushed Toby off the top of the table, allowing James to become champion. (see scores and final Order of Merit table)

Luke Bowers finished 3rd overall with Cam Brown of Saffron Walden 4th and Russell Giblett 5th. All of these will receive sponsorship from CAGU next year in the form of help with their entry fees for County and National events. It was pleasing to see that the average age of all of the leading 5 places is 20 years of age and they all played a significant role in the huge success of the County teams in 2013.

The longest drive at the 2nd hole was won by Luke Bowers with a drive into a slight breeze of 287 yards. Only 4 competitors completed 18 holes and there was a prize for nearest the pin. Because Mark Reeve of Saffron Walden hit such a good shot to 4 feet, he was given the prize.

Seven golfers were eligible for the under 21 prize on the day and this was won by James Reeson. The prize for the biggest mover up the order of Merit on the day was shared by Anthony Richardson and Mark Reeve with Mark generously giving his share of the prize to Anthony as he had already won the nearest the pin prize.

A special thanks must go to County golfer David Milburn who stepped in late in the season to take over the sponsorship from Snake Eyes. This was much appreciated by all of the County golfers and hopefully David will continue with his generous sponsorship in the years ahead. Also to CAGU for their financial assistance which will encourage the better golfers in the County to try their luck and widen their experience by entering National events.

And finally a special mention to Saffron Walden Golf Club for allowing the County to play the inaugural event at their club and in particularly Chris Standen, the competitions secretary, for all of his help to me in organising this event. Chris will be leaving soon for pastures new and on behalf of CAGU I would like to thank him for being one of the more organised and communicative secretaries I have the pleasure in dealing with when doing this job.

Next years David Milburn Order of Merit finals day will once again be at the Saffron Walden Golf Club on Sunday 12th October 2014.
