CAGU's James Reeson of Brampton Park has secured his maiden professional victory on the Jamega Golf Tour event at Essendon Country Club via a playoff.

After signing off a successful amateur career with his 3rd CAGU Order of Merit title, James announced that he was going to join the paid ranks of our sport. Knowing his game the way in which we do, everyone at CAGU wished him well and looked forward to watching his progress. Whilst initially James suffered a minor set back when he failed to advance through at European Tour qualifying late last year, he has regrouped and worked hard to improve his performance for the upcoming season. James successfully negiotiated 2 stages of qualifying to secure his Alps Tour card for the 2017 season.

At Essendon Country Club Reeson fired in 6 birdies in the first round on his way to a 69 (-4) and an overnight position of 2nd behind David Dixon by a solitary stroke. Being in contention seemed to inspire Reeson, as he posted a bogey free round of 71 (-2) for a 140 total (-6). One of his playing partners, James Scade, birdied the last hole to match Reeson's total of 140 (-6) to take the event into a sudden death playoff.

It took three play off holes to seperate these two fine players with Reeson striking the decisive blow and in doing so securing his maiden professional victory on a tour that is a well known proving ground for players looking to further their careers. A fan favourite Andrew 'Beef' Johnston is a notable graduate from the Jamega Golf Tour.

You can find the final leaderboard and scorecards for this Jamega Tour event here: http://www.jamegatour.co.uk/scoresresults/latest-scores/1125-essendon-classic-new-course.html

The next stop for James, is the Alps Tour event in Austria in the 25th Gosser Trophy from May 18th - 20th and you can follow his progress here: http://alpstourgolf.com/tournament/?tourn=GOSS&;season=2017

Congratulations James and may it be the first of many, best of luck in Austria.

County Foursomes

The County Foursomes took place yesterday in glorious sunshine at the Saffron Walden Golf Club. There was an array of talent on show ranging from 15 year olds to members of the County’s senior team.

The course was in as fine a condition for April that I have seen for many years, justifying its position as one of the best courses in the Cambridgeshire Golf Union.

Early leaders in round 1 were County veterans, Graham Goodman and Steve Plumb of the home club with an excellent score of 73. They were out in a disappointing 39 shots but recovered very well on the more difficult back 9 holes to be home in a one under par 34.

Favourites for the title were Dave Quinney and Nick Smits from Gog Magog and they didn’t disappoint with an excellent opening round of 69, with included 5 birdies and 2 dropped shots.

Coming in late in the field to share 2nd place on 73 after round 1 were the Gog Magog pairing of Gareth Bell and Richard Temple.

On the day, my partner Tom Williams and I had the pleasure of playing with the County captain Mark Reeve and County player Olly Tuck and in the 2nd round we witnessed some amazing golf when the pair raced to 5 under par after 10 holes. Having been given a lesson by his partner at lunchtime to alleviate his wayward shots, Mark played much better pm but was definitely outshone by Olly who only hit one poor shot all day and his chipping skills were masterful.

Unfortunately, they dropped a shot on the 13th but then parred home for a fine score of 68 and a total of 142.

It looked now to be a 2 horse race as Goodman and Plumb plummeted to an 81. Quinney and Smits arrived at the 36th hole needing a 3 to win by one shot, although they did not know this at the time. A poor tee shot from Nick missed the green and when Dave could only get the ball to 20 feet above the hole it looked like a sudden death play- off was on the cards. Smits stepped up to the ball and calmly rolled it into the hole for a winning score of 141, pipping a very disappointed Reeve and Tuck by one shot.

Bell and Temple came in with another very creditable 73 for a 146 total and 3rd place.

The best net prize was won by Mark Critoph and Paul Johnson of Gog Magog with a score of 147.

Saffron Walden Golf Club were highly praised for their hospitality and a big thank you must go to all of the office, bar, catering and professional staff for looking after the players and officials so well during the day.

Next year’s Championship will take place at the Gog Magog Golf Club on Sunday 29th April.

Bedfordshire v CAGU
Written by Administrator
Thursday, 20 April 2017 19:14

CAGU visited Millbrook Golf Club near Bedford for the annual friendly match against Bedfordshire. The course was extremely tight and the cold windy weather did not make matters at all easy, especially as it was new to all CAGU players whereas Bedfordshire presently use this course for all their home matches.

Team : Mark Reeve (Captain), Dave Quinney, Nick Smits, Danny Loveday, Ed Dimambro, Olly Tuck, Chris Vince, Jason Evans, Ollie Rust and Callum Brookes.

Foursomes : There were good wins for Nick Smits/Dave Quinney and Mark Reeve/Olly Tuck. There was a narrow defeat for Ollie Rust/Callum Brookes but heavier defeats for Danny Loveday/Ed Dimambro and Chris Vince/Jason Evans. This left CAGU down 3 matches to 2 at lunch.

Singles : The singles overall proved to be fairly even and having played the course in the morning undoubtedly helped. The top three singles all went CAGU’s way with good wins for Nick Smits, Danny Loveday and Olly Tuck. However, the next three went Bedfordshire’s way with lost matches for Chris Vince, Dave Quinney and Mark Reeve. Ollie Rust’s excellent win was counterbalanced by Ed Dimambro losing the next match. Jason Evans followed with a good win but Callum Brookes was unable to win the final match.  This therefore left the singles halved at 5 matches apiece.

The overall result therefore left Bedfordshire with a narrow win 8 matches to 7.
