CAGU hosted the annual Hall Trophy match against Essex at Saffron Walden Golf Club. Unfortunately the weather was wet, windy and most unpleasant for much of the day. The course though was in great condition and the greens were exceptional for the time of year. Both Counties were very well looked after by Saffron Walden Golf Club.

Team : Mark Reeve (Capt), Owen Davies, Danny Loveday, Olly Tuck, Luke Ryan, Chris Vince, Paul Hodgkin, Aron Kumar, Callum Brookes and Ollie Rust.

Foursomes : The foursomes did not get CAGU off to a good start. Top pair Owen Davies and Danny Loveday looked to be cruising to victory but lost the last two holes to leave them with a half. The three middle pairings of Mark Reeve/Olly Tuck, Luke Ryan/Chris Vince and Paul Hodgkin/Aron Kumar all lost fairly comprehensively by 5/4  margins. However, the young pairing of Callum Brookes/Ollie Rust played their anchor role well by winning their match 2/1.  This left CAGU trailing 3.5 to 1.5 at lunch.

Singles : The singles proved to be much closer overall.  Owen Davies playing top played well and won his match. However, the next two matches were lost by Danny Loveday and Mark Reeve but they were followed home with a resounding win from Olly Tuck and another point from Luke Ryan.

Chris Vince and Paul Hodgkin then went down in the next two matches before Aron Kumar achieved a half in his match – unfortunately losing the par three 18th to a “gimme” birdie two!  Callum Brookes followed by winning his match 2/1 and thereby obtaining maximum points for the day. The final match saw Ollie Rust losing his match to an opponent who was well under par for the afternoon.

This left Essex edging the singles 5.5 to 4.5 giving an overall match win 9-6 to a strong Essex side.

On Sunday 26th February 2017 Mark Reeve lead his first match as County Captain in a friendly against Saffron Walden scratch team captained by Graham Goodman. After the morning foursomes the match was still for the taking for both sides with CAGU edging head by 2.5 points to 1.5. The afternoon singles was hard fought from all, with Saffron Walden scratch team running the CAGU players close with some very tight matches. The final score was CAGU 7.5 - 4.5 Saffron Walden. The star men for CAGU were Jason Evans and Luke Ryan both delivering maximum points and a notable mention to Ian Macdonald for Saffron Walden who also delivered maximum points for his team.

Davies/Loveday lost 3&1 vs Tuck/Macdonald  Reeve/Hodgkin won 6&4 vs Brookes/Burlingham Ryan/Evans won 3&2 vs Goodfellow/Jenkins Kumar/Meeds A/S with Martin/Goodman

Loveday won 3&1 vs Burlingham, Davies won 1up vs Tuck, Reeve lost 3&1 vs Brookes, Hodgkin lost 3&1 vs Macdonald, Ryan won 5&4 vs Jenkins, Evans won 3&2 vs Goodfellow, Meeds halved with Martin and Kumar halved with Goodman.

The reports coming back from all the players were that for February the golf course was in fantastic condition, with the greens especially good so a massive thank you to all at Saffron Walden for being fantastic hosts and presenting the course in such good condition for this fixture.
