The Wheeler Scratch Salver was presented in 1969 to the County by Barrie Wheeler, former County player and a past captain of the Gog Magog Golf club and every round of this match play event is played at the Gogs.

Barry emigrated to Canada in the early 1990’s and founded Predator Ridge, regarded as one of the best golf courses in Canada.

The final featured a contest between Nicholas Smits of Gog Magog and County Captain Mark Reeve from Saffron Walden. Neither player has won the Wheeler before, Mark having lost to James Reeson in 2015. For Nick it was his first appearance in the competition.

Both players were out in around par and the match was all square. Considering Mark was having difficulty swinging the club because of a problem with his back, he was hanging on very well.

However Nick turned up the heat on the back nine and with birdies at 10, 13 & 14 he ran out a comfortable winner by 4 & 3.

It was a pity that Mark was not at his best because of his injury because on paper it promised to be a great final. Mark had earlier in the year won the Gogs Trophy and Nick had beaten the course record at John O Gaunt to help the Gogs scratch team win the Peak Production Trophy.

Nick now leads the David Milburn Order of Merit by a massive margin from County Champion Ed Dimambro in 2nd place. The final day will be played out at the Bourn Golf Club on Sunday 15th October when the top 30 golfers will compete for £1000 of competition sponsorship from CAGU and many prizes donated by the sponsor David Milburn.

Many thanks go to the Gog Magog Golf Club for hosting this event throughout the summer and presenting a course in top class condition for the final.
