Ely City Golf Club are champions of Division One of the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union (CAGU) Scratch League after a 29 year wait. The last time Ely City won the top division was in 1981.
The success for the club follows on from losing the title the previous year on their holes/up down record after finishing equal top with the Gog Magog GC.
For the 2010 season Ely finished with an impressive 44 points, this was some way clear of there nearest rivals. Whilst home form contributed largely to the points (no Ely player lost at home) the key games were wining 5-1 at Royston and picking up 2 points away against a strong Elton Furze team.
Mark Smith, Ely’s Scratch Team Captain, said ‘we have an outstanding team spirit and this shows on the golf course, especially in scratch foursomes. Im delighted for the players and to win the league during the year that Jim Kenning is club captain meant a lot to us especially as Jim was a member of the team the last time Ely won 29 years ago’
Ely have had one of there best seasons so far in CAGU competitions. County Champion (Lee Yearn) County Fourball Champions (Carl Beynon and Ali Badcock) CEN Trophy (Alan Todd and Tom Gooch) and now the Scratch League Title.
Squad members are:
Mark Smith, Lee Yearn, Mark Yearn, Terry Ryan, Chris Nixon, Ali Badcock, Carl Beynon, Bob Setchell, Luke Ryan, Ross Wilson.
