On Saturday 31st August the MGU U14 Boys County Championships were held at the formidable par 3 18 hole course at Broughton Heath in Derbyshire. All 10 Midland Counties entered a team of six, with the lowest 5 scores counting towards the team score played over 36 holes.
Windy conditions prevailed as the boys teed off from both the 1st and 10th tees making the course even more of a test, and difficult to gauge what a good score would look like! As the early groups finished it was apparent that a score of 65 or lower would be a great achievement. The CAGU boys started strong with Jake Plumb (58) Olly Toyer (63) and Paul Collington (63) all coming in with scores of 65 or lower. Theo Morris finished his first round with a cracking 62, shortly followed by Will Grimbaldeston on 65, who was 10 over on the front 9 and fought back with a 1 over par 28 on his back 9.
As the boys where eating lunch and getting ready for the afternoon rounds the live scoring updated to show Cambridgeshire 4 ahead of Staffordshire and Leicestershire & Rutland in the team event and Jake 2 ahead in the gross individual. A fantastic mornings work by all the boys.
As the afternoon rounds commenced the windy conditions became more difficult, which was reflected out on the course and the scores with most of the boys carding a higher second round score apart from Harry McDonnell and Theo Morris who both improved on their first rounds.
The anticipation grew as the live scoring was updated as each group finished, with team positions changing frequently, our very own Jonny ‘Rachel Riley’ Sharkey calculated that our lowest score would be +93! The live update confirmed this with Cambridgeshire in 2nd place. Staffordshire were top with 2 scores outstanding and after the live scoring refreshed with Staffordshires’ 5th score, they remained top with +92. The realisation hit that the last score would either reduce this or not count!!
The team had finished in second place, only 1 shot behind Staffordshire, and Jake Plumb had also finished second on count-back with +10 in the individual competition.
An excellent achievement by the U14 team, both in this completion and throughout the season. Well done to all the boys who played in the U14’s this year.
