In total the Cambridgeshire pairing had 4 birdies. Luke Ryan and Tom Rogers continued their unbeaten foursomes pairing in league golf
with an impressive 4&3 victory over Burrows and Cartright. This included an eagle on the 5th hole and birdie on the 9th and 11th holes. Craig Thorburn and Paul Hodgkin started with blistering golf with a birdie on the 1st hole and were 6 up though 6 holes. Further birdies on the 11th and 12th holes gave them an 8&6 victory. At the back Toby Crisp and Owen Davies lost to an inform Mayfield and Wormleighton 7&5.
So at lunch the score was 3-1 to Cambridgeshire.
Dimambro produced another captain’s performance by winning 1 up against Sansome. He was 3 down through 7 holes and managed to overcome his opponent going around in 4 under par winning 1 up. Howard opened with a birdie at the first hole and shooting birdies from the hip won by an impressive 6&5 margin. Our County Champion Ryan lost the first 2 holes but fought back with an eagle on the 5th . A 30 foot putt on the 15th and solid play thereafter sealed a 1 up victory. Croshaw’s putter was hotter than Hodgkins’ and he lost 2&1. Rogers birdied the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th holes and won convincingly 4&2. Crisp, who was beaten in the morning, turned things around during the afternoon. He was 1 down through 8 holes but then birdied the 13th and 15th to win 2 up. Thorburn was bogey free the whole day and ran out winner by 4&3, being 4 under par through his game. In the last game Billingham won 4&3 against Davies.
So after a tight 9 holes of the afternoon Cambridgeshire won convincingly 6-2 and won the Anglia league for the third time in its history winning 9-3. The captain in 2013 was Owen Davies and he was a big part of the team this time around as well as Toby Crisp and Paul Hodgkin.
For Graham Goodman the Team Manager, this has been an impressive season. He completed the Anglia double by also playing and captaining the Senior’s team that won The Anglia Seniors league for the first time. He said “We changed the structure of county golf last year and this provided the catalyst to us winning the league. After a successful winter series and an away victory against Bedfordshire, the team hit the league season running. We won the first 4 games which proved an unassailable position. The key to our success has been the winning spirit of the team and never say die attitude. Praise must go to Captains Ed Dimambro and Owen Davies and also the never ending support of County president David Orwell. Thanks also go to Links GC for hosting the winning fixture.”
