Cambridgeshire Seniors have won the Midland East league for the first time after other results went their way, before playing their last game against Leicestershire.
This is a monumental effort by the Seniors to have this historic success. During the season important victories were earned against Northamptonshire away 9.5-8.5. Nottinghamshire away 9.5-8.5 and home against Lincolnshire 10.5-7.5.
The deciding result for Cambridgeshire occurred in the fixture of Leicestershire v Northamptonshire in which both sides could only draw 7.5-7.5.
In the last game of the season Leicestershire beat Cambridgeshire 10.5-7.5, but the title had already gone Cambridgeshire’s way. Wins occurred for Terry Ryan/Bob Setchell and Mick Heron and Bill Rusted in the foursomes and in the fourball, a win for Jeremy Baldwin and Bob Setchell.
For Cambridgeshire there have been a number of stand out performances. Neil Hughes, the stalwart of CAGU golf remained unbeaten. Graham Goodman, who lead the A team to Anglia league victory won six matches. Bill Rusted, head of Junior golf at St.Faith’s School in Cambridge won four matches. Also Keith Moore, Captain of St Ives GC won four and John Yuill from Links GC won four.
Graham Goodman captain said “What an unparalleled season CAGU have had both int erms of A team, Juniors and the Seniors. They say that the some of parts is greater than the whole well this is the case with the teams of CAGU golf. Important teamwork and a determination to win.
