Welcome to CAGU Seniors which includes all golfers who are 55 years of age or over and are members of clubs affiliated to CAGU.
There is a lot to get involved with at a variety of golfing levels whether that be Inter County team matches, individual open competitions or Inter Club knockout competitions for individuals and teams.
Lower handicap players may be interested in representing the County in matches against neighbouring Counties and Mark Lydon is the current captain of the county team and his details are listed at the bottom of this page.
Andrew Lowin is the Interclub Competitions Secretary and his contact details can be found too at the end of this page. Your club may well already have a thriving Seniors section and the Interclub competitions, famously competitive and friendly, are a great way to pit your skills against local clubs in Cambridgeshire.
The County Seniors team plays in the Anglian League, where we play matches against Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire and also the Midland League where we play Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire again. We also have a friendly match against Suffolk & Essex annually.
Our fixtures run from Spring to Autumn each year, and details of this year’s matches and events can be found on the fixtures tab.
Generally, County Seniors matches, comprising of 12-man teams, play 9 holes of foursomes golf in the morning followed by 18 holes of four ball better ball or singles in the afternoon. The different leagues have slightly different formats but all matches are played off scratch. Each year it is usual for around 20 players to represent the County depending on form, availability and injury prognoses.
We also compete in England Golf’s Southern Foursomes, where we play a qualifying event against our neighbours Norfolk, Suffolk, and Bedfordshire, played over 36 holes of foursomes in one day.
Furthermore we will play in the EGU Midland Seniors Qualifier. This is a 36-hole stroke play event held over one day with a 6-man team, competing against nine other Midland Counties. The winning County on the day then represents the Midland region in the English County Finals.
Players who represent the County purchase kit at a discounted rate consisting of a light blue shirt (of course), trousers or shorts, sweater, wind top and cap.
We also have important individual senior competitions too.
At the start of a season, we hold the Seniors Spring Meeting, which normally takes place in March/April at either Gog Magog GC or Newmarket Links Golf GC. If you are new to the senior ranks, this is an ideal opportunity to get to know your fellow seniors. At this event, we compete for the John Durman Scratch Trophy, using the standard medal format; there are also handicap prizes, one of which is usually Stableford format.
In the height of the season, we have the Seniors County Championship. This is an 18-hole event held in late June or early July. Entry, as for each of the open meetings, is online via the CAGU website. At this Championship, there are a number of scratch and handicap prizes as well as several age category prizes. So, plenty of prize-winning opportunities.
In October, we have the ever popular Seniors Autumn meeting, competing for the John Durman Handicap Trophy. There are both scratch and handicap prizes for this event.
CAGU is affiliated with the Midland Golf Union and they too hold Spring and Autumn meetings plus a Championship event in July. These are excellent events for you to consider entering alongside the above mentioned CAGU events closer to home.
