ABOUT SENIOR’S GOLF
Welcome to the CAGU Seniors. We welcome golfers of 55 years of age or over, who are members of clubs affiliated to the CAGU. If you hold a current handicap of 5 or less and you are interested in representing your County in matches against neighbouring Counties, then please read on. (If your handicap falls in the higher range up to 28 and you are interested in senior’s handicap competitions, then please contact Andrew Lowin, Interclub Competitions Secretary – contact details can be found at the end of this article.)
Cambridgeshire Seniors play in the Anglian League and also the Midland League, as well as having a number of friendly matches against Suffolk & Essex.
Our fixtures run from March to October each year, and details of this year’s matches can be found on the fixtures tab.
Most County Seniors matches consist of 9 holes of foursomes golf in the morning followed by 18 holes four ball better ball or singles in the afternoon, depending on which league the match is being played. All matches are played off scratch, and there are normally 12 in a team. On average, about 20 players represent the County in any given year, playing off handicaps ranging from scratch to 5. At the start of a season, we hold the Seniors Spring Meeting, which normally takes place in March at either Gog Magog GC or Newmarket Links Golf GC. If you are new to the senior ranks, this is an ideal opportunity to get to know your fellow seniors. At this event, we compete for the John Durman Scratch Trophy, using the standard medal format; there are also handicap prizes, one of which is usually Stableford format.
In October, we have the usually very well attended Seniors Autumn meeting competing for the John Durman Handicap Trophy. There are both scratch and handicap prizes for this event.
Both the Spring and Autumn CAGU seniors competitions are very informal and very enjoyable days out with your fellow seniors.
The Seniors County Championship is an 18-hole event held in late June or early July. Entry is online via the CAGU website. At this Championship, there are a number of scratch and handicap prizes as well as four Age Category prizes.
One of the main aims of the County Seniors team, as in recent years, is to win the Anglian League, where we play matches against Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire. The Midland League is a tough league where we play Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Northamptonshire. 2019 was notable as we won both the Anglian League and the Midland League East.
We also compete in England Golf’s Southern Foursomes, where we play a qualifying event against our neighbours Norfolk, Suffolk, and Bedfordshire, which is played over 36 holes of foursomes in one day. In 2017, 2019, and 2023, we reached the final. The other main aim is to win the EGU Midland Seniors Qualifier. This is a 36-hole stroke play event held over one day with a six-man team, competing against nine other Midland Counties. The winning County on the day then represents the Midland region in the English County Finals, which is probably the most prestigious competition for County players and counties to be involved in. Our best result was finishing a close third a few years ago when the event was played around the Old Course at Gog Magog. It is our hope and expectation that our strongest players will make themselves available for all of the Anglian, Midland League matches, EGU Midland Qualifier, and the Southern Foursomes Qualifier.
