It was a glorious sunny morning as the competitors rolled up for this prestigious event. The Links looked in splendid order as the youngest competitor in the field tee’d off at 8:00am from the 1st tee. 12 year old Jake Notton of the Saffron Walden club hit a lovely drive that split the middle of the fairway. The average age of the group teeing off first was 14 years of age which was great to witness.
The leaders after the opening round were local members Joe Austin and Theo Morris who came in with an excellent 71 which contained 5 birdies, including three on the bounce on holes 3,4 and 5. Joe and Theo both represent the impressive CAGU boys team that have won virtually everything in the Midlands and East regions in recent times, as well as playing for the County men’s team.
They were closely followed by their playing partners Sam Marshall and Harry McDonnell of the St Neots Golf Club who were on 72. The highlight of their round was an eagle 3 on the 13th hole.
Sam was fresh from the runners up spot in the Peter McEvoy tournament at Copt Heath, a major National junior event, were he just came up short losing by a single stroke.
Trailing not too far behind were County stalwart Olly Tuck and Jonathan Jenkins on 73, and 3 other pairs on 74, including current holder George Howard and his new partner Richard Southall.
In the afternoon Scott Parnell and Ian Cambridge of Saffron Walden came in with the best round of the day with 69, which included 5 birdies. This gave them a total of 146 and this led until near the end of the day when Andy Grimwood and Olly Toyer of St Neots recorded a 69 which included an eagle 3 at 1st hole put them on 143.
They finished their round as our 1st round leaders Joe and Theo were playing their last hole and crucial putts at 17 and 18 for pars resulted in another 71 for a total of 142 and victory by one stroke.
The best net was won by Daniel Clarke and Cory Dann from Nene Park with a net score of 143. It was great to see a number of Nene Park members playing in the Championship.
Many thanks to the Links Golf Club for their hospitality on the day, enjoyed by all.
Next year’s Foursomes Championship takes place at the St Ives Golf Club on Sunday 26th April.
