Kevin Diss wins the Seniors County Championship

It was a hot and sunny day as the competitors arrived at the Girton Golf Club for the running of the Seniors Championship.

There were 52 seniors competing for this much sought after title, the winner going forward to represent the County at the Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September.

Two of the favourites were Craig Russell and Doug Bottomley of the home club whose local knowledge of the course would be key on the bouncy terrain. The greens were well watered which would make life much easier for the senior citizens of CAGU.

Craig Russell started extremely well and was 2 under par after 10 holes with birdies on the 4th and 10th holes. Unfortunately for Craig a dropped stroke at the 11th and then a double bogey at the difficult par 3 twelfth hole quickly stopped him in his tracks. A further bogey at the 16th was nullified by a birdie two at the 17th. A par at the par 5 last hole would leave him on 70 gross which would have a great chance but sadly Craig double bogeyed the last for a round of 72 and the clubhouse lead.

Playing in the group behind Craig was his club colleague Doug Bottomley and the defending champion Kevin Diss of the Gog Magog Golf Club. Unfortunately, Doug was off his game on the day and finished with a disappointing 80. Kevin on the other hand was in great form and raced to 3 under par after 14 holes after birdies on 2, 8 and 13. Surprisingly, he then dropped strokes at holes 15, 16, and 18 but still finished on level par with a round of 69.

As the scores rolled in it was evident that Kevin’s score was not going to be beaten and he was crowned as the Seniors Champion for the 3rd time in his senior career. In his winner’s speech, a clearly emotional Kevin mentioned how he last won a trophy at Girton when he was a junior member back in the 1970’s.

In 3rd place was the ever-steady John Yuill of the Links Golf Club with a 74. John also won the prestigious Masters Silver Trophy awarded for the best score from the 70+ age group.

In 4th spot was Keith Moore from St Ives Golf Club with 75, who also beat Gerald Collins from Saffron Walden in a card play-off for the Super Seniors Rose Bowl awarded for the best gross score in the 65-69 age category.

Also on 75 was Paul Izzard of Gog Magog who won the 55-59 age category prize.

The 60-64 age category prize was won by the CAGU Treasurer Alan Todd of Ely City with a 77.

An excellent 80-16=64 by Roger Tacq of Ramsey GC won him the best net prize on the day.

The eight best gross scores who will compete for the Seniors Matchplay Trophy over the summer months are as follows:-

Kevin Diss

Craig Russell

John Yuill

Keith Moore

Gerald Collins

Paul Izzard

Tom Gooch

Ken Parsons

Many thanks to the head green keeper for preparing a very playable course in difficult circumstances owing to the lack of rain this year.

To the club President Sue Carlisle and all the staff at the club, many thanks from CAGU for the wonderful service and warm hospitality shown to us all.
